What Is Implant Dentistry?

Dental implants are tiny posts composed of medical-grade titanium, a metal that is biocompatible with oral tissues.  The implant is surgically placed in the jawbone, where it functions as an artificial tooth root.  Implants anchor replacement teeth €“ individual crowns or full or partial dentures €“ directly to the jawbone. Unlike removable restorations, dental implants cannot slip out of place, and, with proper maintenance, may even last a lifetime

Benefits of Implant Dentistry

Implant-supported restorations offer numerous benefits.  Since implants are anchored securely to the jawbone, there is no risk that they will shift out of place.  Patients can therefore eat, speak, and laugh with absolute confidence.  Implant-supported crowns and dentures generally require minimal maintenance, since they are not subject to the wear and tear of tooth-supported restorations.  Finally, the porcelain crowns and dentures we provide are made of beautiful, tooth-colored porcelain that looks remarkably natural, making implants an excellent option for a total smile makeover

The Implant Dentistry Process

The implant dentistry process involves two phases:  surgical placement of the implant(s), and placement of the restoration.  The Texas Center for Cosmetic and Implant Dentistry is distinguished among Houston-area implant dentistry centers, since we perform both phases here at our facility.   Both are performed while the patient is under local anesthesia.  We provide advanced pain-management options, including sedation dentistry, to make the implantation process as comfortable and stress-free as possible.

Dental Implants Surgery

The dentist begins the surgery by making a small incision in the gums, through which he accesses the jawbone.  Next, he drills a small hole into the bone, into which he carefully inserts the dental implant.  Finally, he covers the implant with gum tissue and allows it to heal.  He may place a temporary restoration that will be worn wear until the implant site has healed.  The healing process, called osseointegration, generally takes several months, during which time the implant integrates with the gums and jawbone.  When the implant site has healed completely, the patient returns to our office to have the restoration placed.

Placement of the Restoration

We are able to replace individual teeth with porcelain crowns and multiple teeth with implant-stabilized dentures (full or partial). To place the restoration, the dentist begins by uncovering the dental implant.  Next, he carefully attaches the restoration to the implant, assuring its fit with the surrounding teeth and bite.  This step completes the restoration, and the patient can leave our office with a fully restored smile.
