DR. LEWIS: So I graduated from Baylor College of Dentistry in 1984, so I've been practicing 23 years. I got interested in dentistry, I always had done well in school in the sciences and one of my aunts was a dental assistant and she said well, why don't you think about becoming a dentist instead of a doctor. You know, you'd have more time to spend with your family and you're not on-call all the time. And so I thought about it and I said yeah, okay, I'll do it. And that was in the seventh grade. And so from then on, I just kind of focused on being a dentist. And it's been fantastic. It's really been more than I ever dreamed or expected it to be. It's been wonderful.

When I was in dental school, I enjoyed, you know, learning about all phases of dentistry, but what I really enjoyed was being an ortho and doing braces on young adults and kids and seeing the transformation it made in people's life and how it made them feel better about themself when they look better and they had more self-esteem. Ortho school required a couple more years past dental school and I needed to get out and start working. So I went ahead and graduated and started my practice. And then I found out about an organization called the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. They were saying we want to get together and learn more about this and study it together, so let's form this academy, and they kind of asked different people to join. And most of the people they asked to join were the ones who were inventing all of this stuff and coming together as a forum to talk about it. Well, through a series of events, I found out about this and I was invited to be one of the founding members. And so here I was just out of dental school and all of these other guys had been practicing 30 years, were coming together. So I kind of got to sit at the feet of the people that were really on the cutting edge of all of this. And it was really a godsend for me because it started me off on a path of learning and being right there when things were being developed and I was able to learn from the guys who were actually doing all of the inventing. And it's been really a blessing for me and really exciting and I found that it's freed me up to do so much more than I'd ever been able to do.
