DR. LEWIS: Traditional porcelain veneers are probably one of the greatest breakthroughs in dentistry in the last 100 years in my opinion. They have allowed people to dramatically change the way they look and feel about themselves and I think they're just awesome.
Traditional veneers are very thin shells of porcelain that are placed over the teeth. They're kind of like a fake fingernail like a lady would have placed on her nail. They're bonded over the tooth. And when they're bonded, even through they're a very thin shell of porcelain, when they're bonded, they become extremely durable. I don't have an exact number on how many porcelain restorations I have done, but it's probably north of 25,000. People ask me, you know, well, how long are these going to last? I tell people expect 15 or 20 years and you may end up getting a lot longer than that.
